Paint Protection Film (PPF)

Definition

Paint protection film (PPF) is a transparent, self-healing thermoplastic urethane film applied to a vehicle's painted surfaces to shield against rock chips, scratches, bug acids, and environmental contaminants.

In-Depth Explanation

Paint protection film—sometimes called clear bra—is a nearly invisible layer of urethane that absorbs physical impacts before they reach a vehicle's paint. Modern PPF products feature self-healing top coats: minor scratches and swirl marks disappear when exposed to heat from sunlight or warm water. Film thickness typically ranges from 6 to 8 mils, and premium brands like XPEL Ultimate Plus, SunTek Ultra, and 3M Scotchgard Pro offer warranties of up to ten years against yellowing, cracking, and peeling.

Installation is a precision craft. Installers use computer-cut templates generated from a database of vehicle-specific patterns, then hand-fit each panel using a slip solution, squeegees, and heat guns to conform the film around curves and edges. A full-front-end package—hood, fenders, bumper, mirrors, and headlights—typically takes four to six hours and costs $1,500 to $2,500. Full-vehicle wraps in PPF can exceed $6,000. Because of the high material cost and labor intensity, PPF installation commands some of the strongest margins in the auto care industry.

PPF is often paired with ceramic coating. After the film is applied and cured, a ceramic coating can be layered on top to add hydrophobic properties, UV resistance, and enhanced gloss. This combination gives vehicle owners the ultimate protection stack: physical impact defense from the film plus chemical and environmental defense from the coating. Detailers who offer this combo package can bundle services and increase average ticket value significantly.

For shops and installers offering PPF, managing quotes, tracking material inventory, and scheduling multi-day jobs is critical. RINZ's invoicing and job-management tools let you build detailed estimates with line items for each panel, track material usage, and send professional invoices—all from your phone or tablet.
