Paint correction is the process of removing surface imperfections—swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, water spots, and holograms—from a vehicle's clear coat through controlled machine polishing with abrasive compounds and pads.

Paint correction is widely considered the most skill-intensive service in the detailing industry. It requires an understanding of paint systems, abrasive technology, pad dynamics, and machine mechanics. The goal is to level the clear coat just enough to eliminate defects while preserving as much material as possible. A paint depth gauge is often used before and after correction to measure clear coat thickness and ensure safe removal levels—typically no more than 2 to 5 microns per polishing pass.
Correction is categorized into stages based on severity. A single-stage (or enhancement) polish uses a medium-cut compound and finishing pad to address light swirls and minor marring—suitable for newer vehicles or well-maintained paint. A two-stage correction begins with a heavier cutting compound to remove deeper scratches, followed by a finishing polish to refine the surface to a high-gloss mirror finish. Three-stage corrections add a jeweling step for concours-level results and are typically reserved for show cars or high-end restorations.
The tools of the trade include dual-action (DA) polishers like the Rupes LHR21 and Griots G9, rotary polishers for heavy correction, and a range of foam and microfiber pads in varying aggressiveness. Compounds from Meguiar's, Sonax, Rupes, and Koch-Chemie each have different cut and finish characteristics. Professional detailers build their compound-and-pad combinations through experience and testing on paint test panels.
Paint correction is one of the most profitable services a detailer can offer. A single-stage enhancement on a sedan might be priced at $250 to $400, while a full multi-stage correction on a large SUV can command $800 to $2,000+. Because most customers who invest in correction also want a protective coating applied afterward, paint correction naturally leads to ceramic coating or PPF upsells.
